{"id":22428,"date":"2016-08-04T09:50:42","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T09:50:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pre-production.taftcollege.edu\/admissions\/?page_id=22428"},"modified":"2021-04-13T17:27:15","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T17:27:15","slug":"residency","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/archive.taftcollege.edu\/admissions\/apply\/residency\/","title":{"rendered":"Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">California Residency Determination<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">California Education Code and Title 5, Sections 54000-54072 require that each student enrolled in or applying for admission to a California community college provide information and evidence to determine his\/her residence classification for tuition purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">To qualify as a California resident, you must verify <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>physical presence <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\">in California and <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>intent <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\">to become a resident one-year and one day prior to the residency determination date, which is the published date before classes begin for a new semester. The one-year and one day period begins when you are not only present in California, but have also demonstrated clear intent to become a resident of California. <i>Physical presence within the state solely for educational purposes does not constitute establishing California residence regardless of the length of that presence. The Taft College dorms are ineligible and cannot be considered a permanent California state residence.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The burden of proof is on the student to verify <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>both<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> physical presence in California AND intent to make California your residence. Please bring ALL documents necessary to establish residency to the Admissions office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Below is a checklist of documents you should provide to verify your California residency status. <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>Please note: no single document is a determining factor.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Document Checklist: Primary Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">TWO (2) proofs in your name OR your parent\u2019s name if under 19 dated on or before one year and one day prior to the start of the semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Intent<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">California state and federal tax returns (forms 1040 and 540) with W2 forms (showing California as the home address)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">California automobile registration<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">California driver\u2019s license and\/or California ID card<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s6\">California voter registration <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/elections\/registration-status\/\"><span class=\"s7\">Click here for website<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Military personnel: Active Duty orders and Military ID, showing permanent or home record as California<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Ownership of residential property in California<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Physical Presence<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Establishing and maintaining active California bank account<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">California license for professional practice\/membership in California organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Petitioner for divorce in California<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Utility bills in your name (i.e. Pacific Gas &amp; Electric) for the past year<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Proof of employment (pay stub) for the past year<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Rental\/lease agreement for the past year in California<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Verification of California public assistance for the past year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>It is important to bring ALL relevant documentation with you when you visit the Admissions Office to avoid delays.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Residency Requirements &#8211; Admissions<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">California Residency and Citizenship Requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">By state law, Taft College is required to obtain evidence from students of physical presence in California and of their intent to make California their home state for other than a temporary period. For this reason, all information requested on the Admissions Application must be furnished. Incomplete applications will not be processed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">A California resident, for purposes of community college admission, is a person who has maintained physical presence in California for at least one year and one day immediately prior to the first day of instruction with the clear intent of making California his or her home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Non-residents of California will be required to pay the non-resident tuition fee. Non-resident students who have attended three years of high school in California and graduated from a California high school may be eligible for exemption from non-resident tuition per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csac.ca.gov\/post\/california-nonresident-tuition-exemption\"><span class=\"s2\">AB540 regulations<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Per\u00a0<\/strong><strong><u><a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180AB2210\">AB 2210<\/a><\/u><\/strong><strong>, Education Code section 68075.65<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Education Code section 68075.6 grants an immediate nonresident tuition fee exemption to eligible Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders and refugee students who settled in California upon entering the United States. This exemption is granted for one year from the date the student settled in California upon entering the United States.<\/p>\n<p>This exemption applies to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Iraqi citizens or nationals (and their spouses and children) who were employed by or on behalf of the United States Government in Iraq (Pub.L. No. 110-181, \u00a7 1244)<\/li>\n<li>Afghan and Iraqi translators (and their spouses and children) who worked directly with the United States Armed Forces (Pub.L. No. 109-163, \u00a7 1059)<\/li>\n<li>Afghanistan nationals who were employed by or on behalf of the U.S. government or in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan (Pub.L.
