Taft College winds up for its 2nd annual Triple Play Dinner & Auction<\/p>\n

benefiting the college\u2019s athletics programs. The event will be held at<\/p>\n

The Historic Fort in Taft on Friday January 23, 2015, with no host<\/p>\n

cocktails starting at 6:00 and the dinner will begin at 7:00pm.<\/p>\n

The Taft College Athletics department is excited to announce this<\/p>\n

year\u2019s special guest; Ron Coomer, former Taft College student-athlete<\/p>\n

and former 9-year veteran major league baseball player. Last year\u2019s<\/p>\n

guest speaker was major league baseball player and author, Dave<\/p>\n

Dravecky.<\/p>\n

Coomer attended and played baseball at Taft College in 1986-1987 and<\/p>\n

was a 14th round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics in June 1987.<\/p>\n

Coomer still holds records at Taft College, most notably hitting 19<\/p>\n

home runs in 1987.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Coomer played in the major leagues from<\/p>\n

1995-2003, with most of his career spent with the Minnesota<\/p>\n

Twins. In 1999, Coomer made the American League All-Star<\/p>\n

Game in Boston as a first baseman. He retired from baseball in 2003 as<\/p>\n

a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had a major-league batting<\/p>\n

average of .274, while hitting 92 home runs and driving in 449 RBI.<\/p>\n

Since his retirement from baseball, Coomer has been a working<\/p>\n

member of the media. He worked for Fox Sports North for several<\/p>\n

years covering the Minnesota Twins. This past year he became the<\/p>\n

radio-color analyst for WGN radio covering the Chicago Cubs.<\/p>\n

The second annual Triple Play Dinner and Auction will be catered by<\/p>\n

Salty\u2019s Barbecue. All proceeds from the event will help support Taft<\/p>\n

College athletic programs. Individual tickets to this event are $60<\/p>\n

presale and $75 at the door. Sponsorship tables can be purchased for<\/p>\n
