{"id":2152,"date":"2015-10-20T20:47:13","date_gmt":"2015-10-21T04:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pre-production.taftcollege.edu\/tcwp\/cougaronline\/?p=2152"},"modified":"2015-10-20T20:47:13","modified_gmt":"2015-10-21T04:47:13","slug":"lu-chi-fas-10th-year-at-taft-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.taftcollege.edu\/echo-online\/blog\/2015\/10\/20\/lu-chi-fas-10th-year-at-taft-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Lu Chi Fa\u2019s 10th Year at Taft College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oldweb.taftcollege.edu\/tcwp\/cougaronline\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/LCF-3-e1445399306412.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2155\" src=\"http:\/\/oldweb.taftcollege.edu\/tcwp\/cougaronline\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/LCF-3-e1445399306412-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"LCF-3\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Hector Gutierez<\/p>\n<p>Lu\u00a0Chi Fa made\u00a0two\u00a0appearances October 19<sup>th<\/sup> in the Cougar Room at Taft College.\u00a0 The room was illuminated with Chinese decorations set up\u00a0by the student body and Kamala Carlson who hosted the event.\u00a0 Many students of Taft and also a few classes from Roosevelt elementary were eager to hear in person what was portrayed in novel <em>Double Luck.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lu Chi Fa, the name meaning \u201cnew beginning,\u201d explained how his life always seemed to have just that, a new beginning. Having lost his parents at age three, Lu Chi Fa was sold for rice to a chief who gave him the nickname\u00a0&#8220;Double Luck.&#8221;\u00a0 But the chief\u2019s cruel punishments provoked Lu Chi Fa to live with his uncle who he saw as a father-figure in his early childhood and enjoyed being around. On the other hand, his uncle\u2019s wife was not as pleased by his presence. The cycle continued through different relatives.<\/p>\n<p>From Shanghai to Taiwan, Lu Chi Fa had to adjust to a new beginning multiple times. At one point, begging in the streets was his only way to earn his next meal. Nobody would pay attention to him until they heard the different dialects he spoke which was proof of his struggle to find his way in life.\u00a0 Having to work in a shoe factory making women\u2019s heels and as a delivery boy for construction materials, Lu Chi Fa made a trip to Honolulu and then to the mainland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oldweb.taftcollege.edu\/tcwp\/cougaronline\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/LCF-1-e1445399432637.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2153\" src=\"http:\/\/oldweb.taftcollege.edu\/tcwp\/cougaronline\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/LCF-1-e1445399432637-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"LCF-1\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When he experienced the difference in quality of life from the two continents, he realized he didn\u2019t want to leave.\u00a0 He turned his 38-day passport into a 4 year student visa by enrolling into a private college.\u00a0 He worked for as long as he could, sometimes 15 or 16 hour shifts as a busboy and bartender, until finally receiving his citizenship in 1983.
