[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a nationally recognized program that was developed at the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC) to help students succeed in traditionally difficult gateway courses. SI at Taft College uses the UMKC SI model, which is focused on the facilitated study session. However, SI at Taft College has been modified to meet the needs of TC\u2019s student population. Each semester Supplemental Instructional Assistants (SIs) are assigned to classes based on instructor requests. SIs provide academic support during class and outside of class through facilitated study sessions. SIs plan and lead weekly sessions where students practice and discuss course content and develop study skills with their peers.\u00a0 Supplemental Instruction continually reinforces course content and teaches cooperative learning techniques that promote student success.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left”][vc_column width=”1\/2″]

Elizabeth McKnight has been an SI since spring 2008. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Development from UC Davis and a Master of Arts in Education from CSUB. Elizabeth completed the Supplemental Instruction Supervisor Workshop at the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 2008 and presented at the 6th International Conference on Supplemental Instruction in 2010.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Greg\u2019s been a Supplemental Instructional Assistant for a LONG time. Before that he was a Life Skills Aide at the Transition to Independent Living Program for an even LONGER time. He graduated from Taft College with an Associate of Arts degree and from California State University Bakersfield with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He has lived in the Taft area his entire life<\/p><\/div><\/div>
