“Rec” Offers Many Activities for Westsiders

If you need a break from studying or just looking for some fun, the West Side Recreation & Park District, 500 Cascade Place in Taft, CA 93268, is the place to go.

“The Rec is the best place to do extracurricular activities and it has the best workout equipment,” said Brendan Halstrom, Taft College baseball player.
The WSRPD offers access to a state of the art weight room, a spacious gymnasium, and a bowling alley fit for champions.
The weight room is full of exercise machines and weights to help you achieve your fitness goals. Just $5 will grant you access to the weight room and the gymnasium for a day. If you are serious about your fitness you may obtain a monthly pass for $30. Six-month passes for $150 and yearly passes for $240 are also available.

From average Joes to gym rats, the Rec Center’s weight room is sure to have something for everyone. If you are new to the gym scene and need some help getting into the swing of things, the Rec offers personal trainers upon request.
TC students playing indoor soccer
Taft College soccer players said they enjoy the gymnasium on a regular basis. The versatile space allows plenty of room for indoor soccer and team bonding, a player said.
The WSRPD staff can also set up a volleyball net, batting cages, and a racquetball court upon customer request. The Center is open from 4am to 10pm Monday through Thursday, 4am to midnight on Friday, 8am to midnight on Saturday, and 9am to 10pm on Sunday.
The bowling ally at the Rec Center, West Side Lanes, has four lanes that can hold up to 24 bowlers. It cost $2 a game or $15 per hour to bowl and $2 for shoe rental. West Side Lanes also offers “Glow Bowl” which includes blacklight, music, and laser lights. Bowling memberships are also available.
West Side Lanes also offers other monthly specials and many programs on holidays and special occasions.
