Announcement of Interim Superintendent/President
December 10, 2015
Announcement of Interim Superintendent/President
I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has designated Mr. Brock McMurray as the Interim Superintendent/President, effective February 1, 2016. Brock will serve in this capacity while the District engages in a search for a new, permanent Superintendent/President following the departure of Dr. Dena Maloney. We anticipate that the search will be complete by June 2016.
Brock joined Taft College in 2001 as the Dean of Student Services. He became Vice President of Student Services in 2007. As the Vice President, Brock was responsible for leading all aspects of student services including admission and records, counseling, EOPS, DSPS, Assessment Center, and student activities. He was also responsible for campus safety, student housing, the Transition to Independent Living Program, and the Children’s Center.
In 2011, Brock assumed responsibility for Facilities, and has overseen construction and facilities projects relating to Measure A and Proposition 39.
In 2013, Brock became the Executive Vice President of Administrative Services. He is responsible for leading Fiscal Services, Payroll, the Bookstore, Cafeteria, and Facilities.
The District has engaged PPL, Inc. to conduct a national search for the next Superintendent/President of the West Kern Community College District. A search of this magnitude requires a lot of time and effort. In addition, Ms. Shelley Klein has announced her intention to retire no later than May 1, 2016. To support the search for the next Superintendent/President and the Administrative Assistant to the President and the Board, the Board of Trustees will be contracting with former Superintendent/President Dr. Roe Darnell to serve as its liaison with the search firm. Dr. Darnell will provide leadership to the search process and helping to ensure a successful search during this time of change.
Please join me in congratulating Brock McMurray on his new role as Interim Superintendent/President of Taft College. The Board appreciates your support during this transition period.
Sincerely,
Billy White President West Kern Community College District Board of Trustee
“The Night Before” Movie Review
By Hector Gutierrez
“The Night Before” is definitely one of the funniest films to come out this winter season.
The movie is about three friends who have spent Christmas Eve together for the last ten years in an effort to one day attend the Nutcracker Ball (an exclusive private party that only those invited are aware ).
The main character Ethan, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer, Inception, 50/50), is a drifter in life with no career or family and has always depended on his two friends since his parents passed away ten years ago.
His two friends, Isaac (Seth Rogan) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) have since then taken Ethan under their wing as their own family.
The film is very entertaining and hilarious throughout its entirety, but it does have its edgy moments. A lot of sexual content, both verbal and visual, are displayed throughout the film and make up most of the comedy bits.
Like many of Seth Rogan’s other films, this one involves a lot of drugs added to the satire of the characters night.
Based all the films content, this film is more suited for a younger crowd who can appreciate the humor in sexual content and inebriated humility.
Performing Art Club Fundraiser: The Gift of Music
The performing arts club is selling a music CD as a fundraiser. The CD consists of 10 instrumentals that I wrote and perform on a nylon string acoustic guitar – the nylon brings an extra warmth to the music. All of the songs are very relaxing. My wife uses this album in her classroom during independent study time. This is not a Christmas album but makes a GREAT Christmas gift! Each CD is $10 and is not available as a download. The CD will be released on iTunes and Amazon sometime after the first of the year.100% of the proceeds will go to the Performing Arts Club. One of the goals of the Performing Arts Club is to bring talented student musicians into a professional studio and record a compilation CD consisting of one or two original songs performed by each of the students. Funds raised from the sales will help pay for the students to have studio time at the same studio in Bakersfield where I recorded this album. You can purchase the CD at the book store or contact me, I have several in my office. If you leave me a message I can deliver a CD to your mail box or office and you can leave me your payment later. Please make all checks out to “Taft College” with “Performing Arts Club” in the memo. And yes, we do accept cash. 🙂Link to Sample
