Liberal Arts Gathering
Candice Duron, the head counselor for the Liberal Arts majors, put together a very special event for the whole community. Lunch and a showing of the movie, Mona Lisa Smile, was provided for all of the students and faculty.
Last year was Duron’s first time having the event. She put on a slideshow of famous art work, and everyone stood about the room and talked with one another. This year was the second year, and Duron decided she would show a movie instead of another slideshow, just to change things up a bit. “Research shows that if students feel connected to one another, including the faculty, then they will succeed,” Duron explains as I ask her about her reasoning for coming out with this event. Faculty asked students about their majors, everyone discussed the movie, and shared interests. The event was a wonderful idea to pull everyone together.
Duron is excited to see how next year’s Liberal Arts gathering will turn out, and so are the division students and faculty.

Writers of Kern February Speaker- Harvard Professor
Writers of Kern will host Harvard professor of publishing, LeeAnne Krusemark, at the Clarion Hotel on Rosedale Highway, February 21, from 9:45-12:00 noon.
Krusemark’s “How To Write an Irresistible Query Letter” covers the basics of query letters for writers who are ready to approach an editor with their manuscript.
“The query is an editor’s first impression of you as a writer. If they don’t like the query, they won’t even read the manuscript,” said Krusemark who will cover formatting, what to include, where to send, and how to send a query letter.
LeeAnne Krusemark is an adjunct online professor of publishing for Harvard, is a nationwide speaker, and has published magazine articles and business books. She uses her experience as a former journalist and newspaper editor to help writers navigate the business of publishing.
Writers of Kern is the county’s local branch of the California Writers Club, which has 1600 members in 19 branches throughout California. Each month, Writers of Kern hosts a professional speaker at their regular meetings. Learn more about Writers of Kern at writersofkern.com.

We end the fall semester of 2014 with an amazing exhibit in our very own Taft College Art Gallery. This exhibit displays incredible photographs by Gary Graupman and Erwin Ledford. The photographs were taken in Australia and Alaska of flora and fauna.
Of course, we couldn’t end the semester without an art reception for the artists, so on December 12, 2014, professor Swenson hosted a reception. Artist Gary Graupman shared the limelight with Brian Jean who played the acoustic guitar for the audience. The beautiful sound of the music along with the photographs was enough to captivate the audience. Brian Jean played some of his new music along with music still in the making.
Gary Graupman spoke about each one of his photographs. He shared his favorite ones with the audience and spoke about his trips. His family and friends were there to show him support.
The exhibit will be on display in the art gallery until January 23, 2015, so there is still time to go see it. “There is never an admission at the Taft College Art Gallery so bring a friend.”

Taft College winds up for its 2nd annual Triple Play Dinner & Auction
benefiting the college’s athletics programs. The event will be held at
The Historic Fort in Taft on Friday January 23, 2015, with no host
cocktails starting at 6:00 and the dinner will begin at 7:00pm.
The Taft College Athletics department is excited to announce this
year’s special guest; Ron Coomer, former Taft College student-athlete
and former 9-year veteran major league baseball player. Last year’s
guest speaker was major league baseball player and author, Dave
Dravecky.
Coomer attended and played baseball at Taft College in 1986-1987 and
was a 14th round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics in June 1987.
Coomer still holds records at Taft College, most notably hitting 19
home runs in 1987.
Additionally, Coomer played in the major leagues from
1995-2003, with most of his career spent with the Minnesota
Twins. In 1999, Coomer made the American League All-Star
Game in Boston as a first baseman. He retired from baseball in 2003 as
a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had a major-league batting
average of .274, while hitting 92 home runs and driving in 449 RBI.
Since his retirement from baseball, Coomer has been a working
member of the media. He worked for Fox Sports North for several
years covering the Minnesota Twins. This past year he became the
radio-color analyst for WGN radio covering the Chicago Cubs.
The second annual Triple Play Dinner and Auction will be catered by
Salty’s Barbecue. All proceeds from the event will help support Taft
College athletic programs. Individual tickets to this event are $60
presale and $75 at the door. Sponsorship tables can be purchased for

Writers of Kern Announces January Speaker
2015 WOK January Speaker
Saturday, January 17, Writers of Kern proudly presents award-winning author and featured speaker Dr. Alton Gansky to kick off a new year of motivational and information-filled meetings.
In his talk, “Moving from Inspiration to Publication ~ An Insider’s View,” Gansky will discuss what makes for a great idea and how to shape that idea into print worthy material. The author of over 40 books, novels and nonfiction, all published with traditional houses, he said, “I’ve been selling my writing for twenty years.”
Dr. Gansky will provide insights into the working of a professional writer’s mind. He will discuss how to take the necessary steps that lead from idea to publication and relate how writers face and conquer the challenges of publication.
Alton Gansky (BA, MA, Lit. D.) has served as keynote speaker and teacher at writers conferences around the country and Canada. He directs the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference held each year in North Carolina. See www.altongansky.com to learn about Dr. Gansky and his books.

The Second Annual Holiday Door Decorating Contest

As the fall semester comes to an end we can look forward to the end of the year celebrations. Those celebrations however got an early start here on campus. Faculty engaged in an epic holiday door decorating contest the first week of December, and the winners were announced December 9, 2014.
Faculty got into the spirit and decorated their doors with every inch of holiday awesomeness they could come up with. Many themes filled the campus doors everything ranging from Star Wars to Surfer Santa Claus. In my opinion all the doors and their decorators are winners and they all deserve an A for awesome creativity.
In third place came the talented Jill Brown and Kayleen Brown who created a Peanuts themed door. The snoopy props were loved by the judges. It was definitely a sweet reminder of the beloved cartoon loved by many. Speaking about sweet, Jill and Kayleen received a gift card to See’s Candy for placing in the top three. A sweet prize from the sweet judges for the sweet contestants.

In second place the Math Lab’s crew (Rebekah Horton, Brad Cramer, Kent Miller, and Morgan Haskell) took a break from crunching numbers to create a Gingerbread theme door. The judges loved the different textures and fine details that were used to bring the door to life. This door however was part of a bigger set up. The Math Lab and Writing Lab teamed up and dedicated the Gingerbread styled house to Taft College and our beloved campus dog, Ginger who sadly passed away. The writing lab’s door did not make the final cut because it fell outside the parameters of the judging round. All together however it makes a wonderful gingerbread house and it is a must see! The second place winners received a goodie cart from the judges.

In first place came the playful snowball fight themed door created by Joell Chaidez, Bonita Bullard, and Kristal Powell from the Testing Center. It was given the title “A TC Snow Fight” and the judges absolutely loved it. “The expression in each picture made it seem like they were actually involved in a snow fight”. First place winners received a large gift basket.
